Poznan - Capital of Violin

| |

Poznan is world-famous as a venue for two major music events. These are violin and violin making competitions held in Poznan since the 1950's. Both are named after Henryk Wieniawski, prominent Polish composer and violin virtuoso.

Every five years, starting from 1952, Poznan hosts the International Violin Competition. The first Henryk Wieniawski Competition was held in Warsaw in 1935 to commemorate Wieniawski's 100th birthday anniversary. The aim of the competition is to pay tribute to Henryk Wieniawski and popularize his music works. It is also an opportunity for promoting talented young violinists. Since the 12th edition of International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition Shlomo Mintz, world-famous violinist, has been entrusted with the jury composition and competition rules co-authorship, which made the already world-reputed contest more famous and popular with talented violinists. The next edition, the 14th, will be held in Poznan from October 8th – 23rd, 2011.

Poznan is also renowned as a venue for the International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Making Competition. It is the oldest contest of this kind in the world. Its first edition was held in Poznan in 1957. One of the competition initiators was the Poznan Museum of Musical Instruments, where the award-winning violins are displayed. Every five years, the International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Making Competition attracts more and more talented violin makers and world-recognized jurors contributing to the revival of the artistic craft. It is also here in Pozna that violin-makers can receive both secondary and higher education, thus, the Violin Making Competition is an unrivalled opportunity for sharing the experience in this field. The next edition will ne held in Poznan from May 8th-14th, 2011.
