Getting Around Poznan by Car or Bike

Getting Around Poznan by Car

While using a private car or one hired from one of the car rentals, always drive carefully and beware of potholes. If possible, avoid the peak-hour traffic (i.e. between 7 a.m. – 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. – 7 p.m).

Roads

Poland has a poorly developed infrastructure of roads whose quality is a far cry from Western European standards. Fortunately, thanks to the inflow of European Union funds the situation has been improving and by 2009 Poznan and other major Polish cities like Wroclaw, Lodz, Cracow, Katowice and Warsaw will have an expressway built which will connect them with the expressway network of Western Europe.

Polish expressways are distinguished by the letter A which precedes it. Details on the routes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roads_and_expressways_in_Poland.

Poznan has an A2 motorway connecting the city with Swiecko (Polish-German border) and Lodz. Its further section via Warsaw and Siedlce going east as far as the Polish-Belarusian border (Kukuryki) is to be built by 2013.

The condition of the roads leaves a lot to be desired. Thus, beware of potholes !

Traffic regulations

Drive carefully and follow the traffic regulations. The speed limit in the built-up area is 50 km/h between 5 a.m. – 11 p.m. and 60 km/h between 11 p.m. – 5 a.m., whereas on the motorway you may drive at a maximum speed of 130 km/hour.

Starting from April 17, 2007 all drivers must drive with their dimmed headlights night and day throughout the year!

Getting Around Poznan by Bike

Since 1990 the local authorities have been interested in building new cycle paths and expanding the existing ones in Poznan and its environs. There are some cycle paths in the centre and in the outskirts of the city. Some lead to the outlying tourist attractions and cities. The Velo 2 and Velo 9 – parts of the European Bike Paths are also situated in Poznan.

For more information on the cycle paths see: http://www.tutej.pl/cms.php?m=313
